Yom Kippur

Yom Kippur (The Day of Atonement), the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, occurs on the

10 th of Tishrei. During the period between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, known as the

"Ten Days of Repentance", emphasis is placed on internal retrospection, the asking of

forgiveness for sins and harm caused during the previous year, resolution to amend our

ways during the coming year and prayer. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are known

collectively as the "High Holidays" – according to tradition, one's fate for the coming year is

decided on Rosh Hashanah while the judgment is sealed on Yom Kippur and our sins are

atoned. The day is therefore dedicated entirely to purification: through fasting, prayer,

introspection and a complete cessation of daily activities.
