929 is an Israeli initiative for daily study of a chapter of the bible, completing 5 new chapters each week. The project was established in 2014 by the then Deputy Minister of Education, MK Avi Wortzman and is directed by Rabbi Benny Lau and the journalist Gal Gabay. The project's name is derived from the 929 chapters in the bible. The first cycle of the project began on November 21, 2014 with an inaugural event at the President's House in Jerusalem and is scheduled to conclude in the summer of 2018.
The objective of the initiative is to enable a joint reading of the bible for all Israelis. The project is accompanied by a website in which people from a variety of fields write about the chapter being learned that day. Study groups participating in the project have been established and many institutions also take part. The "President's bible group" was established at the official presidential residence, accompanying the daily progression through the chapters of the bible.
