The Holon Project
This major undertaking puts into operation, in partnership with the city of
Holon, the model for developing Jewish identity education created by PANIM. This pilot will serve as a leverage for making Jewish identity education a top priority for the Ministry of Education and a model which the Ministry can implement in other municipalities in the future. The idea is for each selected school in
Holon (mainly secondary schools) to formulate their own vision for educating toward Jewish, Zionist, democratic identity and values. This vision will guide them in creating a suitable school culture and environment, and programs in the areas of formal and informal education, teacher training, etc.
PANIM’s model, aimed at putting the recommendations of the Shenhar Report into practice, stresses an indispensable blend of knowledge, values, and experience, and a school-wide, holistic approach that involves parents and the surrounding community. Each school will have its own steering committee and a PANIM coordinator to help them move through the process, which will be spread out over several years. In addition, each school’s programming must incorporate at least one pluralistic organization specializing in Jewish identity education.
The Holon Project, which has received the backing of a major foundation, was launched in March 2008.
